Free Practical Skills courses

South Dublin County Council are offering one community group the opportunity to attend a free practical hands-on course run by the Rediscovery Centre. The course will provide practical skills training and also demonstrate the Rediscovery Centre ethos of diverting waste from landfill by redesigning and reusing waste materials.
The chosen group can choose between a fashion skills course, a furniture upcycling skills course or a bike maintenance skills course. All participants must be aged sixteen or over (preferably 18+ for the furniture course). The courses can be offered to a maximum of 10 participants.  The course will take place over 3 full days or 6 half days, on dates agreed between the community group and the Rediscovery Centre.
Fashion skills course:
The fashion skills course has been designed as a thorough introduction for beginners in garment construction/dressmaking.  Over the sessions participants will be shown how to interpret information on patterns, lay and cut out patterns, construct and professionally finish a skirt step by step all whilst developing new fashion skills and reusing waste textiles.
Furniture upcycling skills course:
The furniture upcycling skills course has been designed as a thorough introduction for beginners in furniture redesign and upcycling.  Over the sessions, participants will be shown how to identify suitable items for redesign, planning and processes for upcycling, basic furniture upcycling skills such as removal of existing finishes, redesigning, and application of new finishes.
Furniture upcycling skills course:
The furniture upcycling skills course has been designed as a thorough introduction for beginners in bike maintenance.  Over the sessions, participants will be shown how the skills necessary to maintain and repair their own bicycle.
